🤖 Hugging Face Releases HuggingChat: An Open Source Rival to ChatGPT

In the competitive world of AI-powered chatbots, Hugging Face, a venture-backed AI startup, has just released an open source alternative to OpenAI's popular ChatGPT, known as HuggingChat. It is a 30-billion-parameter open-sourced AI chatbot.

Key points to consider:

🤖 Competitive Capabilities: HuggingChat shares many functionalities with ChatGPT, including writing code, drafting emails, and composing rap lyrics, accessible through a web interface and integration with Hugging Face's API.

🌐 Open Assistant Origins: HuggingChat's AI model was developed by Open Assistant, a project organized by LAION—the German nonprofit behind the dataset used to train the text-to-image AI model, Stable Diffusion. The group, composed mainly of volunteers, has ambitious goals to build a customizable, open, and accessible AI assistant for the future.

🚧 Work in Progress: While HuggingChat exhibits some limitations and inconsistencies in its responses, it does have filters in place to avoid responding to dangerous, illegal, or offensive questions.

🖼️ Researchers Built Multi-Modal ChatGPT: Prompt with Images

The latest OpenAI’s GPT-4 model has showcased remarkable multi-modal abilities, such as generating websites from handwritten text and identifying humor in images. These capabilities, which differ significantly from those seen in previous vision-language models, are primarily attributed to the use of a more advanced large language model (LLM).

However, this particular feature has not yet been released in ChatGPT

In response, researchers have developed a multi-modal open-sourced LLM project called: MiniGPT-4. This model demonstrates capabilities similar to GPT-4, such as detailed image description generation and website creation from handwritten text.

In addition to the existing capabilities, MiniGPT-4 exhibits new talents like writing stories or poems based on images, solving problems shown in images, and teaching users how to cook using food photos.
